The Best Vegetarian Friendly Places to Eat in Leeds

The Best Vegetarian Friendly Places to Eat in Leeds

Leeds is an exciting, thriving city with a huge student population. If you’re a backpacker or visitor staying at our hostel, you’re certainly going to be spoiled for choice when it comes to entertainment.

One question we often get asked by visitors at our Russel Scott Hostel is what the veggie foodie scene is like. The good news is there are plenty of places to find a tasty vegan snack or full-blown vegetarian feast.

Here are just 6 of our favourites:

Knave’s Kitchen
Finding great veggie and vegan fast food is never easy. This is one place that you are going to want to try out, though, even if you’re only in Leeds for a couple of days. Situated on Call Lane, the restaurant can get pretty busy, especially around lunchtime, but it’s often well worth the wait queuing. This is street food at it’s best and the chefs use all fresh ingredients. You’ll find it by the bar Oporto which also sells vegan beers and wines. That’s a great combination.

Hansa’s
Gujarati fayre is on offer at this stylish restaurant which has been on TV in recent times. This is the perfect location for a slap up evening meal and comes with all the veggie goodness that you could wish for. Modern and eclectic, there aren’t many restaurants in Leeds that are as famous as Hansa’s. Open mostly in the evenings, you may want to book early if you are thinking of dining there.

Nichol’s Vegetarian Eatery
If you like deli style food and plenty of choice to boot, Nichol’s is on Harrogate Road. Open between 8 in the morning and 3.30 pm, this is perfect if you’re going out for the day and need some quality supplies to take with you. They serve a mix of sandwiches and wraps but also main courses with a tasty Buddha bowl and smoked tofu. This is another fast food place that you will want to visit while you stay in Leeds.

Grub & Grog Shop
Located on Sheaf Street, this really is a lively venue for vegetarian and vegan food and delivers everything from breakfast through to lunch and dinner. They pride themselves on using fresh, local produce and specialties include homemade crumpets and sumptuous veg bakes. If you’re travelling with a meat eater, don’t worry, they also do bacon sandwiches and some nice roast dishes. This is great grub that really fills you up.

Bundobust
Combining Indian cuisine with craft beers, this is certainly one veggie eatery to check out soon after your arrival in Leeds. They recently featured in Time Out’s top 10 for Indian restaurants in the UK and some of the recipes are simply out of this world. Their tarka dahl and rice is to die for but you can also get plenty of smaller, really tasty dishes to snack on. This is healthy, hearty and original Indian vegetarian cuisine at its best.

Mardin
Full vegan and tasty with it, Mardin can be found on the Crescent in the centre of Leeds. It’s got one of the biggest vegan menus around and a friendly, café style atmosphere that is relaxed and bubbly. This is another place that tends to get super busy so it’s worth booking ahead, especially towards the end of the week. If you’re looking for healthy vegan food at a decent price, this should be top of your list.
